Teaching and Learning Approaches
We know that children learn in different ways, just as adults do. For this reason, teachers plan different teaching and learning approaches depending on the aim of the lesson. Children are usually grouped within their class according to their levels of understanding, thus allowing the children to move forward at a pace which is appropriate for them.
Children may be taught as a whole class for PE,RE and Music. The teacher may introduce a new idea or concept to the whole class and then instruct the children to work individually on a task. The children may also at times work as a group, collectively organising thoughts and ideas to reach one outcome. Throughout your child’s schooling, these various teaching methods will be used. Each has its place in a balanced and well-developed curriculum.
Our Curriculum Provision
In providing for your children we are guided by the requirements of the National Curriculum and the requirements of Lincolnshire County Council.
We provide a broad and balanced curriculum allowing for the individual needs of each child to be met within well planned learning experiences.

- Physical Education
- Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship(PSHE&C)
Curriculum planning involves all teaching and support staff to ensure there is progression and continuity in learning.
There are two main ways in which we deliver the curriculum
- The subject approach
- The cross-curricular approach
The subject approach is when children are taught the skills and knowledge of the subject.
The cross-curricular approach teaches a number of subjects through a theme or topic. For example a History topic on the Tudors may include various types of writing(English), collage (Art), Music, Dance and Drama. This approach allows the children to apply the skills and concepts gained from subject teaching.
Both approaches allow for active learning opportunities through the use of practical experiences.
It is important for children to acquire skills in Literacy. We offer the children a wide range of opportunities to express themselves clearly and effectively in both written and spoken language. Children are encouraged to develop a real enjoyment of fiction and non-fiction books, through regular use of a well stocked library and class book corners. We do not follow a set scheme so the children have access to a range of books but we do use The Big Read to help develop reading skills across the school. Children are encouraged to take books home and share them with parents. Paired reading opportunities and reading buddy systems are also in place. The children are taught phonics using the Letters and sounds scheme and Jolly Phonics, but other initiatives are used also like Collins Big Cat and Words and Pictures.
Writing is encouraged from an early age and every effort is valued. The children begin with emergent writing. This is when they make marks and discuss what they have written. As they develop knowledge of letter sounds they are encouraged to sound out words phonetically. Children then go on to draft their work, refine it and use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. We also teach children the importance of a neat and legible handwriting style and high quality presentation of their work.
Children’s speaking and listening skills are developed through a variety of activities, including drama, participation in plays, assemblies and visiting speakers. We use talking partners, small group and whole class opportunities to develop skills for listening attentively and responding appropriately. The National Literacy Strategy is the basis for the children’s learning.
Mathematics is a tool for living and it is our aim to make it exciting and positive to ensure the children are confident in all areas.
Children learn through practical activities, visual imagery and symbols based around everyday problems. They are encouraged to discuss what they are learning and explain what they understand.
Children are supported in developing quick mental recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts in order to support other areas of mathematics. The elements of number, shape and space, data handling and mental agility within the National Numeracy Strategy are the basis of the children’s learning of mathematics.
Our aim is for all the children to become immersed and enthused by scientific concepts and experiences around them so that they will want to find out more and begin to ask challenging questions like“what if”and “why”. They will become scientific thinkers through undertaking practical activities and investigations which cover biological, physical and material aspects of the world around them.
ICT is used in Science with digital cameras and microscopes being used to record scientific observations. Spreadsheets can be used to organise, analyse and display data which has been collected. Mathematics is also used during investigations when measurements are taken and then displayed as graphs or tables. English skills are used constantly as the children make predictions and discuss outcomes and record their findings.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
ICT is now an integral part of all our lives. We aim to provide an ICT
Curriculum which will give the children the necessary skills to function effectively in the modern world.
Each week the children receive focused ICT teaching in our networked computer suite which allows them to become familiar with different types of software and hardware. There are two additional computers in each classroom. Children are actively engaged in their own learning through the use of interactive whiteboards, which promote pupil participation in a variety of lessons. Teachers and children also use the TV,iPads, tape recorders and digital cameras on a daily basis. Children can use the digital recorder to film PE lessons and activities which they then evaluate. Projectors and electronic toys like Roamers also further the children’s technological opportunities.
Religious education is taught within the guidelines set out by Lincolnshire LEA. The main focus is the Christian faith but the children also study Hinduism and Islam. Children are encouraged to appreciate and understand the values and beliefs of the rich variety of cultures we have throughout the world. We promote respect and tolerance towards those with beliefs different from our own. Children use artefacts, books, visits and we encourage visiting speakers to make our RE teaching interesting and enjoyable.
History stimulates the children’s curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. Children develop a sense of chronology and learn about changes in everyday life was like at certain times through using a variety of skills. Children sequence events, question choices made, do research, sift through evidence and argue for their point of view. They use pictures, photographs, maps, books, artefacts and visits to enrich learning.
Through the teaching and learning of Geography we aim to help the children make sense of their environment and gain a better understanding of the world in which they live.
Children are helped to understand the similarities and differences between places and to recognise the distinctive features that give a place its identity.
They acquire skills using a variety of maps, globes, diagrams, photographs, books and visits.
Design and Technology
Children design and make a range of products in each year group, building on their existing skills and being taught to work efficiently and safely. Children do this by investigating, disassembling, designing and making things and then evaluating existing products.
Art and Design
Children express their understanding of Art through a variety of materials. They experiment with techniques for drawing, painting, printing, modelling, working with textiles and computer art programs. The children also look at the work of artists and craftspeople.
Children are given the opportunity to sing songs, use percussion instruments and compose their own scores. They listen to a range of music and respond through discussion, dance or by drawing pictures.
Physical Education (PE)
Children enjoy being active and they need opportunities to use their imagination. All children experience dance, gymnastics, athletics and team games through a structured programme. The junior children also have the opportunity to go swimming and explore outdoor pursuits. Children will only be excused from PE lessons if a note is provided by parents/carers. Otherwise it is assumed that all children at school are fit to participate in all forms of Physical Education.
Sporting Aims and Provision for Sport
The school aims to provide equal opportunities in equipping children with the necessary physical skills, agility and sporting attitude to play team games in a friendly, competitive manner. Children will be given the experience of playing netball, football, hockey, rounders, basketball and swimming during their time at our school. They will be encouraged to work confidently with equipment and apparatus.
The school has a junior sized football pitch and a netball court on the playground.
We aim to give the children the understanding that physical exercise plays an important part in a healthy lifestyle.
We encourage sporting links with other schools.
Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship (PSHE&C)
We aim to promote in children an understanding of their rights and responsibilities and those of others. This will help them develop attitudes and responses that support the efforts of others and embrace differences. Each week we follow a programme of direct teaching supported by group discussions(circle time) and other activities linked to relationships and behaviour.

We have a school council which prepares elected representatives from Reception to Year 6 to take an active role in democratic decision making. A staff representative supports the school council meetings. Children have been involved in a uniform change and a very successful playground and field project.
There is a school uniform as follows: -
School sweatshirt, royal blue with embroidered logo and a white/ blue cotton T-shirt with the School logo.
These items are available from the school. Grey skirt and grey or black trousers can be obtained from any shop. Additional items like hats and book bags are also available. For PE the children are required to wear blue/black shorts and a white/blue T-shirt. Plimsolls will be required in the Summer months.
We have tried to keep the uniform as simple as possible, to save you expense.
