Andrew Dunsmore - Member of the Governing Body for 12 years and Chair of Governors for the last 10. I have worked for Tata Steel (previously Corus and British Steel) for the last 32 years after graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Metallurgy from Strathclyde University in Glasgow. I work as a R&D Programme Manager, based at Swinden Technology Centre in Rotherham, where I manage 150 researchers delivering Research Projects for Tata Steel Europe. This involves extensive travel in the UK, Europe and occasionally India. I am also a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Materials. Metals and Mining. Married with two children (aged 16 and 19), both of whom attended Waddingham Primary School. Outside of work I take part in the sports of golf, swimming and cycling, and other interest includes Astronomy and Space Travel, reading , cooking and making bread, and DIY (not always successfully!). In Academia, I have strong links to Universities of Warwick, Sheffield, Imperial College, Strathclyde and Cranfield and sit on a number of joint Government and Academic boards.
In addition to my role as Chair of the board of Governors of Waddingham Primary, I was previously Science Governor and now Numeracy Governor which involves monitoring, and auditing the process of learning , in order to challenge and raise standards in these core subjects. The role of Chair itself:
- Develops and implements a strategy for the School through the School Improvement Plan (SIP), in order to raise standards in the school
- Identifies and ensures a focus on the key improvement areas in the school
- Ensures Finance, Teaching and learning, Senior Management, Complaints, Policies and Health and Safety are managed across the school through a process of Committees and Monitoring
- Ensures a good balance of skills and backgrounds across the Governing Body to implement the School Improvement Plan
- Approves appoints and interviews teaching posts and Head Teachers
- Liaison with Local Education Authority, Education professionals, parents and pupils
My name is Melissa Kapil and I have been a parent Governor at WPS for nearly 10 years. Both of my children attended WPS since reception and I have 1 child still at the school in Year 6 and 1 now in secondary school. I am a teacher at a different Primary school which enables me to spend time in WPS as a governor as well as attending the many events organised for parents.
I am the chair of the curriculum committee where we support and challenge the work that goes on in school by developing a School Improvement Plan and monitoring its implementation. Being involved in the development of the school through the role of a governor is enjoyable and rewarding.
Revd Kathy Colwell: Community Governor, Responsibility for SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities)
I am currently the parish priest (Rector) of Kirton in Lindsey, Grayingham & the Triangle Parishes. Before being ordained, I spent 30 years as a Secondary School Teacher of Religious Education and the Humanities. I remain enthusiastic about education and was already a regular visitor to school assemblies and occasional lessons before being appointed Community Governor a couple of years ago. In the summer of 2015 I agreed to be the SEND Governor. This involves working closely with the SEND Co-ordinator to keep up with current legislation and practice, as well as being willing to offer support in the classroom where appropriate and where possible. I see myself primarily as a friend of the school and available to help build bridges between the school and wider community.
